Festivals

The sector at a glance

Festivals are multi-day, multi-stage or multi-screen gatherings built on a temporary city that has to be designed, permitted, staffed, insured and struck inside a few weeks — music, film, food, book, comedy and cultural events, plus the promoters, producers, ticketing platforms and vendors that make them run. The economics are unforgiving: a huge fixed spend on talent guarantees, staging, security and site infrastructure is committed months before a single ticket is scanned, so weather, a soft on-sale or a permit delay lands directly on the margin. Austin is the anchor market and arguably the most festival-defined city in the United States — SXSW, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Levitation, Austin Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, aGLIFF, Old Settler's, Moontower and the free Blues on the Green series all run inside one mid-sized city, and C3 Presents, headquartered in Austin, produces both ACL Fest and Lollapalooza. The buyers here are festival directors and producers, talent buyers, promoters, sponsorship and partnership leads, city special-event coordinators, venue and park operators, and the food, merch, staging and ticketing businesses that live off the calendar.
